North Carolina tint law (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 20-127): On the windshield, tint is allowed only along the top 5 inches or down to the AS-1 line, whichever is longer. A clear, non-obstructing UV film is allowed on the rest of the windshield. On cars (sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, wagons), every other window (front sides, rear sides and back glass) must let in at least 35% of visible light, and a meter reading above 32% is accepted. On SUVs, trucks and minivans, the front side windows must be at least 35%, and windows behind the driver can be any darkness. On all vehicles, reflectance can be no more than 20%, and red, yellow and amber tints are not allowed. Vehicles registered out of state are exempt, and drivers with a medical condition can apply to the NCDMV for a medical exception permit. As of December 1, 2025, tint is no longer checked during NC safety inspections, but officers still enforce the law on the road.

Automotive window tinting offers several benefits that enhance the driving experience. The application of a tinted film to the vehicle's windows can reduce glare and provide protection from harmful UV rays, enhancing comfort inside your vehicle. By diminishing the amount of heat entering through the windows, this does in fact lead to the higher potential of fuel savings as there is a reduced need for excessive air conditioning use. Additionally, window tinting lends an increased level of privacy and an enhanced appearance to the vehicle, making it a popular choice among many drivers in North Carolina.
The quality window tinting that we work with here at Champion Window Tinting is known for its durability while being exposed to intense infrared heat and UV light from the sun. They are fully capable of lasting many years, sometimes even a decade or more. The longevity of your window tinting package from our installation shop depends greatly on which of our 4 packages you select, with some materials known to offer extended resistance to wear and tear from exposure to the environment. Proper care for your tinted windows also plays a vital role in maintaining the tint's appearance and functionality over time.
Yes, window tint film can be removed from a vehicle’s windows if needed, but it’s a task best left to Champion Window Tinting. Just like the installation process, removal should be handled by professionals. Our trained technicians know how to safely remove window tint without damaging the glass or any vehicle components—a risk that increases when the job isn’t done properly. This also applies to vehicles recently purchased with a pre-installed tint that the new owner wishes to replace.
Generally speaking, window tinting should not have any impact on any vehicle warranty you currently have, as it is usually considered a non-invasive modification. However, warranties and their conditions can vary widely among manufacturers and specific vehicle models. Therefore, it is wise for you as a vehicle owner to consult directly with Champion Window Tinting to learn as much as you need about our window tint film packages, in addition to connecting with the vehicle's manufacturer or dealer to be absolutely sure about the implications of adding window tinting. Taking this precautionary step helps in avoiding any unexpected complications related to the warranty terms and conditions.
A standard full-vehicle tint installation typically takes two to four hours, depending on the vehicle type and window configuration. Larger vehicles, including full-size SUVs and trucks, may take closer to four hours, while vehicles with complex rear glass or panoramic roofs may require additional time.
After installation, avoid rolling down the windows during the initial curing period to allow the tint to adhere properly. Use a soft cloth and an ammonia-free cleaner to help protect the film.
Yes, old window tint can be removed before installing new film. Removal time can vary depending on the vehicle, the condition of the existing film, and how strongly it is bonded to the glass.
